Al visitar los viveros de fresa de Castilla y León observamos que la multivariedad se ha reducido hasta tal punto que sólo tres variedades coparán en la próxima campaña el grueso de la superficie de producción, con un notable crecimiento de los materiales autóctonos. El reto está en demandar a los obtentores variedades de calidad para ser más competitivos y a los productores, realizar una adecuada planificación de las mismas.

Se pasó de tener una o dos variedades principales a contar con más de 30 diferentes, hasta ser actualmente poco más de una decena las que tienen una representación porcentual significativa, con tres variedades que cubren prácticamente el 80% de la superficie fresera de Huelva. Ni el agricultor, ni el vivero han sido los responsables de esta selección, sino el propio mercado. Fruta de larga vida poscosecha, firme y resistente, precoz y con sabor son las características que prevalecen en los materiales que se están multiplicando en los viveros de Castilla y León y produciendo en la provincia de Huelva.

Un éxito que se traducirá en la siguiente campaña en un crecimiento del 35% de la variedad Primoris, y de un 45% en Rábida, representando en conjunto casi un 30% de la superficie de producción en Huelva.
